“A true original, Mr. Elam is one of the most individualistic of modern dance voices today.”
New York Times
Chris Elam's most recent choreography for Misnomer Dance Theater was named as one of the Top Ten dance performances for 2006 by The New York Times. His company was also cited as one of “25 to Watch” for 2007 in Dance Magazine, among other critical acclaim.
Since founding Misnomer Dance Theater in 1998, his NYC-based company has performed extensively throughout the USA, Cuba, Brazil, Indonesia, Ireland, Holland, and Turkey. He has been on faculty at Brown University and The State Conservatory for the Arts in Istanbul, and has been a guest choreographer at eight universities. The six-dancer company has commissioned twelve composers and is guided by Elam’s frequent intercultural explorations and inventive movement language. Misnomer was featured this year by Apple Computers, which made a commercial about Misnomer’s work with interactive technology, drawing three million visitors to Misnomer’s website.
